Wellness Wednesday No. 26
Pain Is Only Part of the Story
This week, Dr. Shane Davidson explains why a pain score does not tell the whole story. Recovery can also show up in how well you sleep, move, complete daily activities, spend time with family, and return to the parts of life you enjoy.
Ask a Better Question
Instead of only asking, “How much does it hurt?” also ask, “What can I do today that I could not do before?” Your ability to function may reveal progress that a pain number alone cannot capture.
This Week’s Wellness Focus
Measure Function, Not Just Pain

Pain matters, but it is only one symptom. Two people can report a similar pain level while having very different abilities to move through their day. Pay attention to the real-life activities that show whether you are regaining function.

  • Track your sleep: are you resting longer or waking less often because of discomfort?
  • Notice your movement: can you sit, stand, walk, or change positions more comfortably?
  • Look at daily life: are routine tasks becoming easier or requiring fewer breaks?
  • Measure your endurance: can you walk farther or get through more of the day?
  • Count meaningful activities: are you spending more time with family, returning to hobbies, or enjoying life more fully?

Dr. Shane Davidson explains why improvements in sleep, movement, endurance, daily activities, and quality of life can be meaningful signs of healing—even before all of the pain is gone.
Function Is Your Life
Healing is not only about lowering a number on the pain scale. It is also about getting back to sleeping, moving, working, caring for your family, enjoying your hobbies, and participating in the activities that make life feel normal again.
Wellness reminder: keep your healthcare provider informed about changes in your pain, function, and ability to complete daily activities.
Signs That Your Function May Be Improving
Better sleep
You are resting more consistently or waking less often because of discomfort.
More movement
You can walk farther, change positions more easily, or move with greater confidence.
Easier daily activities
Routine responsibilities take less effort or require fewer breaks.
Return to what matters
You are spending more time with family, enjoying hobbies, or participating in meaningful activities.
Your Wellness Wednesday Challenge
At the end of each day, write down one activity that felt easier. Maybe you walked farther, slept longer, completed a task with fewer breaks, or spent more time doing something you enjoy. Ask yourself: “What can I do today that I could not do before?”
A More Useful Weekly Check-In
Pain can change from day to day. Function often gives you a broader view. Once a week, review your sleep, walking distance, daily tasks, time with family, and ability to enjoy meaningful activities. Those changes help tell the fuller story of your progress.
